Vincent W. Coljee

I am 39, Dutch-Canadian, happily married to a wonderful English lady. I only first came across the 1632 book in early 2006 and been playing catchup ever since. My interests in history and science stem from a very young age, and have been going strong since. I have built up a fairly substantial science fiction collection over my lifetime and have been known to attempt to devour libraries. I am finding alternative history is becoming a favorite, although I certainly also stray back to the hard science fiction fold since alternative history is still pretty thin on the ground.

Professionally, my training was in the USA, with a chemistry degree in college and a PhD in biochemistry and biomedical nutrition completed in Philadelphia, followed by a post-doc in Boston. After a 5 year stint in Denmark at a Danish biotechnology company, I am currently working at Harvard University, researching the biophysical secrets of DNA. I also recently started a new biotechnology company which is taking a lot of time away from reading and writing fun things, but certainly is exciting.

It looks like I shall not be writing much, if any, fiction. I don't seem to have the skill. What interests me is not what interests most others and my training in scientific papers, grant proposals, patents and FDA documentation has seemingly made most human interest in my writing a lost cause. But the occasional medical related nonfiction piece I may be able to turn out. Lastly, if I misspell, leave out a word or write awkwardly, it is because I am a proud dyslexic. For those other dyslexics out there, take heart, we don't all need to be like Edison, Ford, Agatha Cristie or even Einstein. ;o)

Imagining life in a small town in Germany in the 1630s is difficult for the average twenty-first century dweller. Picture awaking from an interrupted night's sleep, courtesy of the local swine brawling in the alley below your bedroom window. Extracting yourself carefully from between the siblings sharing the bed with you, you arise and count your bedbug bites.
